The Veil Beginner Guide: First Steps and Starter Quests
When you first spawn, follow this The Veil beginner guide checklist before worrying about complex builds: talk to nearby NPCs, inspect your starter weapon, and activate the local waypoint before heading into the maze.
Inspect your weapon tooltip
Open your bag and read your weapon tooltip. Weapons can have passive effects, active combat skills, or cast skills for spells. Check what your weapon does before entering combat.
Read your active quest prompt
Check your Main Quest text carefully. Note whether it asks for a named monster, a specific material, or an NPC delivery so you do not waste a night chasing the wrong goal.
Register the nearest Obelisk
Walk up to the Obelisk near town and interact with it. Registering waypoints gives you an anchor to fast-travel back to when you need to recover.
The Veil Controls: PC, Mobile & Controller Keybinds
Setting up The Veil mobile controls properly keeps you responsive during combat: open the Layout Customizer before heading into the dark to arrange your action buttons and ability panels, then tap Finalize to save your layout across all character slots.
| Platform | Action & Input | Combat Tip |
|---|---|---|
| PC | Press F (Weave) | Dodge enemy attacks; practice against early mobs before fighting bosses. |
| Controller | Hold R3 (Shift Lock) | Hold the right stick (R3) to lock the camera behind your character for combat. |
| Controller | Hold LT + Bumpers (Swap Weapon) | Hold the Left Trigger (LT) and press LB or RB to switch equipped weapons. |
| Mobile | Layout Customizer (Edit & Finalize) | Move the four action keys, ability panels, and button row, then tap Finalize to save across all character slots. |
Navigating with Quest HUD, Bestiary & Waypoints
If you lose your bearings in the maze, click the gem in the center of your quest HUD to toggle a large guidance arrow pointing straight toward your objective. To check what a target creature looks like and what it drops, open the Bestiary. If you need to equip or change accessories, use the Information menu.

To navigate the maze reliably in The Veil, manage your waypoints carefully: fast travel between unlocked Obelisks has a 60-second cooldown. Touch every Obelisk you discover so you have quick travel options later. While outer gates shut during the day, waypoints you have unlocked inside the maze let you travel back to those spots.

Night Expeditions, Sanity Loss & Early Healing
Follow The Veil beginner guide's night checklist before your first expedition: outer maze gates open only at night, and entering the dark steadily drains your Sanity. If your Sanity hits zero, your character collapses and dies, losing Prestige. Carry Sanity Potions on every run, and remember where you saw lit campfires and Runner Outposts to recover your Sanity before pushing forward.

For an early healing weapon, look into the Verdant Hollow book quest. Speak to the first NPC to start the task, pay 10 Silver to a second NPC to purchase the book, then return to the first NPC with the book and pay 100 Silver. This rewards a Rare weapon with a healing ability, giving you dependable sustain during night runs.

Quick answers
Is there permadeath in The Veil?
No, The Veil does not have permadeath. However, dying causes you to lose Prestige. When your health or Sanity drops low, head to a campfire or use a waypoint to escape rather than risking death.
Can you explore the maze during the day in The Veil?
The main outer gates close during the day. However, if you have already activated an Obelisk inside the maze, you can fast-travel to that waypoint regardless of the time of day.
How do you change your race in The Veil?
You can change your race by using Race Rerolls, which are awarded through official promotional codes in the Shop.
